I would add one more thought, and that is to constantly seek to give more than you get. This is just like any other relationship situation in life. Remember back when you just started dating... it was all about the other person, you sought to meet their needs and make them feel wanted and secure. I would submit that list building is much the same process, only on a much, much broader scale, but this is still a one-to-one relationship building process.
